Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Hindmarsh Shire

🏛️ Sir Robert Menzies

Robert Menzies was born at Jeparit in 1894, where his father operated a general store. He began at Jeparit State School before continuing his education in Ballarat and Melbourne. His later legal and political career led to two periods as prime minister, including the long administration from 1949 to 1966. Jeparit’s connection is therefore both birthplace and early schooling. The small Wimmera town forms the starting point of a public career that became central to twentieth-century Australian federal politics.

📻 Alfred “Alf” Traeger

Alfred “Alf” Traeger came from the Dimboola district and became the engineer associated with the Flying Doctor Service’s pedal radio. His interest in communications began early: at twelve he made a telephone receiver. John Flynn later employed him to develop an affordable radio that isolated households could use to send and receive messages. Generating power by hand left too few hands for operating the set, so Traeger turned to bicycle pedals. The solution helped bring medical contact and conversation to places beyond telephone lines. He also developed a keyboard that converted typed letters into Morse code, making another technical task easier for its users.

✈️ Alexander Emslie

Alexander Emslie taught navigation at Nhill during his air force career, one of the instructional jobs that helped prepare other aircrew. He had entered the RAAF as a radio apprentice after initially being rejected for pilot training, eventually qualifying as a pilot in 1940. Later operational work included commanding Catalina flying boats and a Lincoln bomber squadron. Ill health ended his service in 1955, although he lived for decades afterwards. Nhill belongs to the training side of his story, an essential counterpart to the more conspicuous operations for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar.
